XDCAM import AE-Best way to import MP4 files from Sony XDCAM EX to After Effects CS4/CS5/CS6/CC

December 31 2014 , Written by lauralily10 Published on #xdcam ex mp4 files and after effects, #import xdcam ex mp4 to after effects, #xdcam ex mp4 codec for after effects, #adobe after effects h264, #convert xdcam ex mp4 for after effects

The following topic provides a workflow for efficient editing of video from an XDCAM EX camera. If you have any issue when importing Sony XDCAM EX MP4 files to After Effects for further editing, just follow this simple guide, which offers you a quick fix for the problems with Sony XDCAM mp4 and After Effects on Windows and Mac ( Yosemite included) .

XDCAM EX differs from XDCAM/XDCAM HD in several key areas.
•XDCAM EX cameras record to SxS flash memory rather than optical disc.
•XDCAM EX cameras record full-HD video to MPEG-2 (MP4) format.
•XDCAM EX video is not visible in the XDCAM Explorer window. Use the Device Explorer window to import clips from an XDCAM EX device.
•When editing XDCAM EX video, you’ll edit full-resolution MXF files. Proxies are not available.

"Every time I attempt to import an MP4 video/audio file from my Sony XDCAM EX3, After Effects (and all other Adobe products) tells me it's "unsupported or damaged". I know it's not damaged because it plays through VLC and BS player. Strangely enough it won't play through Quicktime though. I've tried reinstalling everything including Quicktime, and installing the K-Lite codec pack (which I now hear is bad for your system so I uninstalled.)"

Actually, After Effects like CS4, CS5, CS6, CC supports MP4 natively. However, MP4 codec is a final delivery codec it is not one you want to use for editing. Thus, there are many video, audio codec problems while importing MP4 video into After Effects for editing. Plus, even the Adobe program can ingest your MP4 files directly, it takes a long time for rendering. The best method to avoid those problems and save time is to convert MP4 to a more editing-friendly format, such as AE's MPEG-2 (the most compatible video format for AE).

To get the work done, Brorsoft Video Converter for Mac is an ideal choice, which allows you to convert XDCAM EX files to After Effects CS5/CS6/CC for smoothly editing. Besides After Effects, this Mac Sony XDCAM Converter also generates best editing format/codec for filmmakers and video enthusiasts to use in different NLE apps, such as Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere Pro, iMovie, Avid Media Composer Final Cut Express and more. If you are on Windows, Video Converter is for you. Just download it and follow the step-by-step guide below to achieve your goal smoothly.

1. Launch the Sony XDCAM Converter, you can click "Add Video" button (or "Add from folder") to load source files from Sony XDCAM EX. Convert supports batch conversion, so you are allowed to add multiple files to convert at a time.

2. Click the format bar to choose output format from the dropdown list. For After Effects editing, Adobe Premiere/Sony Vegas > MPEG-2 (*.mpg) is one of the best compatible video formats for you to choose.

3. Adjust the video and audio parameters, including the Bitrate of Video&Audio, Video Size, Sample Rate, Frame Rate, Audio Channels, etc., by clicking the Settings button on the main interface for getting the best quality.

4. Click the convert button to start transcoding Sony XDCAM MP4 for Adobe After Effects.

After the process completes, click "Open" button to find the generated videos, and then you can transfer the recordings to After Effects easily and quickly.

Overall, the program is the best XAVC converter for Mac OS X(Yosemite, Mavericks). With this XAVC video converter, you can effortlessly transcode Sony PXW-X500 XAVC to DNxHD .mov, which will create an Avid MC friendly file format keeping the original quality. Besides Avid, this software can also export Apple ProRes for Final Cut Pro, Apple InterMediate Codec for iMovie, MPEG-2 for Adobe Premiere Pro and more NLE systems for native editing. For Windows users, Video Converter is the alternative choice.

Here I share a simple guide on how to convert Sony PXW-X500 XAVC files for Avid Media Composer editing smoothly.

Step 1: Add PXW-X500 footage

Install and launch the XAVC to DNxHD Converter and load source clips to it.

Step 2: Choose output format

Click Format on the main interface and choose Avid Media Composer > Avid DNxHD(*.mov) as output format. It ensures the best quality while working with the output files in Avid.

Step 3: Advanced Profile Settings

In case the default settings do not fit your requirement, you can click “Settings” button and enter “Profile Settings” panel to adjust video size, bit rate, frame rate, sample rate and audio channels.

Step 4: Start encoding XAVC videos

Click “Convert” button to start transcoding Sony PXW-X500 XAVC video to DNxHD for importing to Avid Media Composer.

When the conversion task is finished, click “Open” button to get the exported files and then import the converted PXW-X500 XAVC files into Avid Media Composer 4/5/6/7 to do further editing flawlessly.

Editor’s Note: What we need to keep in mind that Avid MC can’t support 4K XAVC currently, so you will get an error if you try to import it. Plus, Avid does not have a 60p project format so you will most likely be working in a 60i (interlace) type project. To avoid these problems, it will be better to transcode Sony XAVC to a more "edit" friendly codec. Brorsoft’s Video Converter for Mac can be the great app to help you make it.
